Movement Building

Summary

Between July and November 2023, we launched a community of practice to equip GivingTuesday Africa’s leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to launch and upscale their campaigns and/or activations GivingTuesday 2023.

This working group is focused on adapting GT tools and implementing practical techniques to enhance outreach both online and offline.

Objectives

  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration
  • Enhanced monitoring and evaluation: Leaders will have the tools to effectively assess and communicate the outcomes of their efforts.
  • Boosted visibility and awareness: The workshops were designed to assist leaders in refining their campaign/program/project strategies and raising awareness of the movement throughout the continent.

Responsibilities

  • Workshop Coordination: Orchestrated a series of five key workshops on:
  • Storytelling and awareness
  • Event management and facilitation
  • Basic design and presentation
  • Digital marketing
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Collaboration: Partnered with subject matter experts to enhance workshop delivery and impact

Outcomes

  • Skill Application: Encouraged real-world application of skills through take-home activities
  • Recognition: Issued certificates of dedication from GivingTuesday Africa Hub
  • Community Building: Established a robust community of practice aligned with GivingTuesday’s ethos

Approach

Take home activites:

The take-home assignments served as a tactic to reinforce leaders’ application of workshop learnings and promote knowledge utilization. Additionally, they aimed to familiarize us as a hub with campaign strategies and explore ways to support leaders effectively from this perspective.

Workshop replays: To facilitate learning for absent participants and assist leaders in consulting video materials as required.

Certificates of Completion: Attendees received a certificate of completion as a token of appreciation for investing their time in participating in and successfully finishing the workshops. This approach also served as a tactic to cater to leaders’ desire to enhance their reputation or add an accomplishment to their portfolio

  • Inclusivity: To promote inclusivity, all workbooks, workshops, and replays were conducted in both English and French. We employed this approach to empower our French-speaking country leaders, ensuring they feel acknowledged, heard, and involved in the proceedings.

Learnings

Peer-to-peer review could have been more effective. Expanding the community to include individuals outside the organization but within the sector could add significant value and increase the likelihood of more people initiating GivingTuesday campaigns and activities.
